Many of us have long been aware that the Covid virus which invaded our country in late 2019 or early 2020, set off a catastrophic series of events which drastically changed the United States, perhaps forever. The virus itself was not nearly as lethal as had been feared, or even as lethal as the media continued to pretend.
But by the time most Americans figured that out, things had been set in motion that proved irreversible. There was, in a sense, a perfect storm.
Debbie Lerman of the Brownstone Institute has done a creditable job of chronicling the downward spiral and many of the contributing factors. She is astute in noticing things that some of us had not previously factored in... such as the fact that the first people to be aware of the escape of the virus from whatever supposedly controlled setting it had previously inhabited—the people who knew that it was an escape from a previously controlled setting, thereby knew that it had “gain of function” potential which might prove devastating.
Praise the Lord, that dreadful potential was not fully realized, but some people knew that the potential existed-- and those same people were highly influential sorts who set the tone of the initial national reaction.... which then took on a life of its own.
Next, a toxic political climate kicked in. Then the greed factor kicked in, big time. And the longstanding regulatory capture of the FDA and the CDC by their supposed regulees became glaringly apparent as never before. American medicine was already cracked and fragile. Covid broke it.
Evolutionary biologists Heather Heying and Brett Weinstein speculate that the speed with which previously separate power centers coalesced into a single monster-sized entity may portend the reality of a factor known as “emergence” which denotes something new under the evolutionary sun. We can only hope they are wrong, since such a development would be difficult to manage by any means currently available.
All of that said... I still have a nagging feeling that we're all missing something. The speed and thoroughness of the collapse of basic moral norms in virtually all sectors of American society still seems impossible. I continue to struggle to come to grips with it. In fact, I've reached the point where the word “demonic” simply refuses to leave the room, no matter how often my conscious mind issues that order.
Like many bewildered Americans, I'm waiting to be rescued. I'm waiting for the cavalry. Meanwhile I'm doing what I can. And it's not nearly enough.
