QUESTION THE NARRATIVE!
by Patricia Reed - Aberdeen, SD - May 3, 2026
All the “prestige” institutions in America today-- educational institutions from kindergarten to college; mainstream Christian churches (including Catholic); the entertainment industry (including sports); and the “news” industry in print and airwaves and cyberspace—all are marching in lockstep regarding where we came from as a country, where we are now, and where we should be going.
The ideological uniformity of the narrative (despite many logical inconsistencies) makes it hard for most Americans to imagine viable alternatives, let alone embrace such alternatives. One of the most harmful examples is the topic of race. Is there racism in America? Yes, there most certainly is. Do we need to keep working to reduce it further? Yes, we most certainly do.
But is our obsessive focus on that topic, and our almost prideful self-flagellation about it... actually helpful to anyone of any color? No, it is not. America is not the worst country in the world regarding race/tribe/ethnicity, and our history with slavery is not the world’s worst history with slavery. In fact, there is still actual slavery in parts of the world at this moment, slavery which is completely ignored by the people with the megaphones-- as they continue to loudly agonize over the slavery of two centuries ago!
We need some common sense. We elected a black president twice, even though black people were less than twenty percent of the American population at that time. How many countries would do that? I don’t recall any assassination attempts on that president. And I don’t recall Republicans taking to the streets either time, when those results came in.
There’s also the obvious fact that America is still the country that is a magnet for the dispossessed of the world—that’s why we have an immigration problem. Over half of those immigrants are brown and yellow and black. Are they so stupid that they keep coming to a country that is just going to exploit and abuse them? I don’t think so. And they sure don’t want to go back. They voted for America with their feet— the most sincere “vote” any human being can cast.
The areas of sexism and transgenderism are similarly distorted by political groups who have much to gain from maximizing rather than minimizing discontents surrounding those identities (some recently “discovered” for the first time in thousands of years of human history. Hmm.)
Classism is the real problem in America, but the Establishment wants us to keep talking and agonizing about racism, sexism, and purported LBGQT-phobia and islamophobia so that we don’t notice that under mostly “liberal” governance in recent decades... economic inequality has dramatically increased, social-class separation has dramatically increased, and social mobility has dramatically decreased.
Drug addiction and overdoses have increased. Homelessness has increased. Chronic disease has spiked, while student test scores have plummeted. Family formation has slowed (and is increasingly fragile). Globalization and de-industrialization have created ghost neighborhoods and ghost towns. We have covert (but all too real) official censorship and surveillance on a scale previously unheard of. The national debt is astronomical, and the overly “financialized” and under-regulated financial industry is hopelessly, perhaps fatally corrupt.
All of the above under mostly Democratic governance and cultural dominance. The Democratic party wants us not to notice that the Democratic party has become the party of the rich (by every statistical metric). It has also become the party of cultural snobs (though they produce little of lasting value in the cultural area.).
Smoke screens are continuously waved before your eyes to keep you from noticing all those truths. But God has given you agency, and He has given you free will. You do not have to subscribe to The Narrative.
